MI MAMA

The dance concert 'Mi Mama' is an ode to the feminine power that Curaçao dance maker Remses Rafaela recognizes from the women of his youth and the woman of today. Five dancers go in search of their feminine strength in today's world, guided by the rhythm of the Tambú as their inner and musical guideline.

In a theatrical dialogue between dance and (live) music, the viewer is taken on a quest that is about taking ownership of who you are, where you come from and what you stand for.

'Mi Mama' can best be regarded as a theatrical dance concert in which the dialogue between dance and music is leading. Complex rhythms, compelling lyrics and powerful dance come together in a dynamic and spontaneous interplay where the Afro-Caribbean influence is an unmistakable part of what you see and hear

Remses followed his greatest motivation to focus on the world of women: his children. He is the father of a son and daughter, the two biggest drivers behind his personal journey and wants to build a world where his children feel understood, heard and seen. As a father, he feels it is his duty to contribute positively to the world in which his children grow up. With 'Mi Mama', Remses wants to pay a theatrical ode to the power of women and their cultural identity, thereby giving his children different perspectives and experiences.

FRESH XL
@ MAAS THEATER DANCE

During 'Fresh' by Maaspodium theater and dance on April 16, 2021, Remses shared the outcome of a short research project called 'Mi Mama' via a livestream. In this study, he interviewed a diverse group of 25 women and girls aged 12 to 70 years with the question "what does being a woman mean to you?" The answers were as diverse as the group, but there were many commonalities and landmarks discovered.

For this research, Remses worked with three dancers with the aim of introducing Tambú and placing it in a new theatrical context. Remses is known as an all-round dancer with his own movement idiom: traditional Afro-Caribbean dance styles such as tambu, seu and merengue mixed with acrobatics. A dance language in which the versatility of his roots, love for hip-hop, his culture and his different backgrounds as a dancer are expressed in a unique amalgamation.
